East of Kyoto, it is nice to spend time in a desolate area close to the lovely town Mimasaka-Kamo. Lovely to have this local Japanese feeling for a while with friendly locals, especially in hotel Ujitei. It even reminds the vibe of the anime Studio Ghibli films. This place is easily reachable with slow trains and then great for cycling and walking in that area.
